Mavka: Spirit of the Forest T-shirt
In Ukrainian folklore, the Mavka (or Niavka) is the ethereal guardian of forests and fields. Beautiful and elusive, she is often depicted with long hair adorned with wildflowers, dancing where the grass grows thickest. Legends say she casts no shadow and leaves no footprints, as she exists between the worlds of the living and the spirit.
However, there is a dangerous allure to her beauty. She may approach a handsome young man, teasing him with playful banter, but if he becomes enchanted and agrees to dance with her, she may lure him into a trap and tickle him to death.
Mavky (the plural form) are most often seen near rivers and lakes during Green Week (the week of Pentecost) and on the night of Kupala. During this time, they roam the fields, meadows, and forests, as their souls are set free to take on human form.
