The modern image of the Motanka is a synthesis of folk elements that emerged relatively recently. Ukrainian artisans create these symbolic dolls, traditionally associated with protection and well-being. The term “Motanka” derives from the Ukrainian verb motaty, meaning “to wind” or “to wrap.” Contemporary makers often decorate them with symbolic crosses on the face, while the dolls themselves are believed to possess a special, almost magical energy.
