The modern image of the Motanka is a synthesis of folk elements that emerged relatively recently. Ukrainian artisans create protective talisman dolls known as “Motankas.” The term “Motanka” derives from the Ukrainian verb motaty, meaning “to wind” or “to wrap.” Contemporary makers often decorate them with symbolic crosses on the face, imbuing them with protective meaning.
